The Simulated Environment for Theatre (SET) research team is comprised of researchers and assistants from universities across Canada who, collectively, have expertise in theatre, humanities computing, multimedia, graphic design, computer science and English. Their interests lie in the analysis, display, and reception of text, performance and graphics through technology. Since the project began in 2003, at various stages of development, the team has had the opportunity to collaborate with a number of researchers, professors and students in the design, programming and testing of the SET Interface.

The Simulated Environment for Theatre (SET) research team came together in 2008 to enhance and build upon the capabilities of its predecessor, Watching the Script, a 2-dimensional digital environment for reading, exploring, and directing plays. Watching the Script was developed by members of the Experimental Reading Workshop (ERW), an open-ended research and design project collectively led by faculty, students and staff at the University of Alberta. Founded in 2003, the ERW currently operates under the umbrella of the Canadian Institute for Research in Computing and the Arts (CIRCA).
